Community Involvement

Making a difference in communities where we live and work

Each year, our employees consistently demonstrate that at Matrix, we truly live our core value of community involvement. Together, we positively impact the communities where we live and work by volunteering, fundraising, mentoring and raising awareness for countless organizations. Matrix employees help improve the lives of those in our communities by concentrating on our key initiatives:

  • Community Development
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  • Education
  • Health
  • Holiday Support
  • Environment and Sustainability

Community Development

Our philanthropic efforts are reflected in many ways throughout the communities where we live and work. From building homes in underserved areas to mentoring in classrooms, Matrix employees understand this importance of strengthening our local economies. Below are just a few of the ways in which we support our communities.

Habitat For Humanity LogoHabitat for Humanity

Matrix has built numerous homes for Habitat for Humanity, encouraging employees and their families to participate in this worthy cause. By teaming with another local company each year, employees are able to build a home for a deserving recipient in three months.

Salvation Army LogoSalvation Army

Each year, employees adopt angels from the Salvation Army Angel Tree so that underprivileged families can enjoy presents and groceries over the holidays. In 2015, Tulsa area employees adopted over 100 families during the holiday season. Matrix also participates in the Salvation Army’s annual food drive and women’s auxiliary fundraisers. Chief Executive Officer John Hewitt with his wife Dede served as the 2015 Chairs of the Tulsa Salvation Army benefit dinner, raising over one million dollars for this worthy cause.

United Way LogoUnited Way

Matrix supports the United Way® and their mission of living united to drive change and results around the world. The Company does this in three ways: employee paycheck pledges matched by the Company at $0.50 on the dollar, a golf tournament fundraiser and the annual Day of Caring community service project.

In 2015, Matrix donated over $287,000 to the Tulsa Area United Way, our largest contribution in history with a 30% increase from 2014. The Company matched over $60,000 to employees’ donations and more than 100 employee donors committed over $500 each.

Education

Matrix knows the importance of investing in education and innovation for students and children in the areas we live and work. From both a company and personal perspective, preparing the future workforce from an early age is incredibly rewarding. Below are just a few of the ways in which we support education in our communities.

Junior Achievement

The Junior Achievement program works to foster entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work-readiness to students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Matrix employees volunteer in the classroom each month, teaching the relevance of education to our youth. Additionally, Chief Executive Officer John Hewitt serves on the State Board of Directors and Chief Information Officer Rick Bennett serves on the Regional Board of Directors.

Little Lighthouse

Matrix provides funding and services to this Tulsa-based, tuition-free school for children with special needs. Each year, Matrix fabrication employees build a playhouse for their school playground.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skills are extremely important to a business such as Matrix. These fields are deeply intertwined throughout our operations and are key competencies when hiring many of our employees.

Matrix supports STEM programs in higher education and universities as well as in grades K through 12. Whether mentoring in the classroom or providing tours of our fabrication shops, Matrix is committed to STEM collaborations throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Matrix donates $25,000 each year to support the Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance. In 2014, a portion of this donation went to the Tulsa US2020 Team who was pursuing a federal grant to fund STEM program for Tulsa area children. The Team became a finalist in this challenge and attended a White House ceremony in May 2014.

Health

At Matrix, our employees' health and wellbeing drives our business. Matrix understands the importance of providing not only great career opportunities, but also opportunities to improve the quality of life for our employees and their families. We achieve this by teaming with community programs affiliated with health and wellness initiatives.

American Heart Association

Employees and their families gather each spring for the annual Heart Walk, raising funds and awareness for this worthy cause. Chief Operating Officer Joe Montalbano sits on the Executive Leadership Team of the Tulsa Heart Walk and under his direction, Tulsa area employees raised over $34,000 in 2015, tripling our goal of $10,000.

Food Bank LogoCommunity Food Bank

For the last two years, nearly 60 Matrix leaders have worked at the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma to sort donations and put together food packages that go to more than 4,000 children each week. In 2015, the Matrix group put together over 600 food packages.

Ronald McDonald House

Joe Montalbano, Chief Operating Officer, sits on the Tulsa Board of Directors for this nationwide charity that provides a “home away from home” for families whose children are receiving hospital treatment for serious medical illness or injury.

Giving

Matrix Service Company's giving programs support organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada where we live and work. Matrix and its employees contribute financial and physical support to community initiatives and programs.

Matching program

The Company’s Charitable Giving Policy was established to support the work of charitable organizations and to encourage employee giving. The program provides a dollar-for-dollar match of employee contributions. It is a powerful way to share the Matrix spirit, while doubling the impact of our employees’ community contributions.

Employees get to choose the charitable organization that they want to support and have matched.

Employee giving

Matrix employees contribute to their communities by volunteering their time and talent to raise money. In North America, Matrix supports the United Way® and other health and human services organizations. During the 2015 Employee Giving Campaign, employees pledged over $100,000 specifically to the Tulsa Area United Way.

Volunteer Paid Time Off

Matrix encourages all employees to become involved in their communities, lending their voluntary support to programs that positively impact the quality of life in our communities. The Company has a program that allows employees to use paid time each year to participate in their chosen volunteer program.
