Chevron Recognizes Matrix Service with 2024 Contractor Safety Award

In April, Chevron held its Contractor Operational Excellence Management Forum to recognize select contractors for operational excellence in 2024. In their relentless focus on safety, Chevron conducted 150 competency assessments of its business partners worldwide throughout the year. The assessments resulted in 380 follow-up actions to drive continuous improvement for a workplace free of Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIF).

Matrix Service was one of only 13 contractors recognized by Chevron for a Contractor Safety Award. Matrix Service’s Gulf Coast and West Coast teams were individually recognized for their achievements.

Chevron’s criteria for contractor recognition included:

  • Zero serious injuries, fatalities, and no recordable spills
  • Demonstrated safety culture aligned with Chevron’s values, including trust to report incidents and near misses and to use stop work authority
  • Demonstrated strong partnership and commitment to achieving a SIF-free place by identifying hazards and ensuring safeguards are in place and functioning.
  • Contractor Short Service Employee managed per Chevron’s policy

David Dunaway, Division Manager for Matrix Service based in Catoosa, OK, accepted the award on behalf of OUs 212 and 221. To win this Gulf Coast achievement, Dunaway said that the entire team had to show commitment to both companies’ exceptional standards in the work it performed throughout 2023. “We had to align with Chevron’s core values and show overall safety and quality performance. It comes down to the whole team,” Dunaway said.

David Craig, Project Director for Matrix Service based in Orange County, CA, accepted the award on behalf of the West Coast team, OU 257. Craig added that the Chevron Contractor Safety Award was particularly momentous because of safety challenges Matrix experienced in 2023.

Craig said, “We had to essentially rebuild [the team], hire numerous new field crew members, and get them all to work effectively together, and ensure they were comfortable with stop-work authority.” Earning a safety achievement from a major client was especially meaningful because it reaffirmed that Matrix, as a company and through each employee, remains committed to safety and quality.

Earlier this year, Matrix Service Foreman D.J. Duncan was recognized as the 2024 Contractor Safety Person of The Year by BP Cherry Point. This award is another affirmation of Matrix’s commitment to protecting ourselves, our clients, and those around us.

Congratulations to the Gulf and West Coast teams.
